T.G. Masaryk Square - Hosted By

The idea of the proposal was to create a generous, variably usable area, which was missing in Tábor, and to add it to a quiet zone, which would offer the inhabitants and visitors of the city various possibilities of relaxation. The design works with several spatial elements – the main open area supports the dominant feature of the axis-symmetrical Agricultural School and forms a bay with it on a pedestrian street linking the city center and the railway station. The flat area provides space for cultural, social and leisure use and forms the central central element of the square. Irregular concrete blocks, forming the main surface, let the graphic pattern of dark expansion joints stand out. The grinding of concrete reveals the texture of the local granite aggregate, widely used in the city’s parterre. The gaps of the recessed light strip conceal the TGM initials. Interactive tiles are placed at the ends of the letters, allowing you to change the color moods, control simple games, and launch the summer day’s nebulae. The drainage of the surface is also discreetly solved within the expansion joints. Near the library in the south-western corner of the square is the “student grove” in contrast to the main area, a lush shelter beneath the treetops planted in a regular grid into the stone pavement. Benches, hammocks, swivel chairs, a drinking fountain and a public bookshelf are freely placed between the trees. The furnishings include drawers for charging electronics and wi-fi hotspot. At its original site, a statue of a Red Army was preserved as part of the raster. In the opposite corner of the square, there is a renewed promontory of the oldest Czech botanical garden and returns the atmosphere of the arboretum back to the square from where it was gradually displaced. It is a strip of free-growing tall trees, bounded by flower beds of perennial trees, among which are wooden piers. Source: atelier Fabik
